It was a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The country consisted of several island territories located in the Caribbean Sea. The islands were also informally known as the Dutch Antilles. The country came into being in 1954 as the autonomous successor of the Dutch colony of Curaçao and Dependencies. The Antilles were dissolved in 2010. The Dutch colony of Surinam, did not become part of It but became a separate autonomous country in 1954

This island subregion was located in the eastern Caribbean Sea, to the east of Puerto Rico. There were three islands, collectively known as the "SSS Islands": Saba, Sint Eustatius, Sint Maarten. Islands located in the Leeward Antilles known as the "ABC Islands": Aruba (until 1 January 1986), Bonaire including an islet called Klein Bonaire ("Little Bonaire"), Curaçao, including an islet called Klein Curaçao ("Little Curaçao")
