Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. It is the second largest country in Europe after Russia, which it borders to the east and north-east. The nation's capital and largest city is Kyiv. The territory of modern Ukraine has been inhabited since 32,000 BC. During the Middle Ages, the area was a key centre of East Slavic culture under Kievan Rus', which was ultimately destroyed by the Mongol invasion in the 13th century. Over the next 600 years, the area was contested, divided, and ruled by external Economy: It's an emerging free-market economy. It grew rapidly from 2000 until 2008 when the Great Recession began worldwide and reached Ukraine as the 2008–2009 Ukrainian financial crisis. The economy recovered in 2010 and continued improving until 2013.  From 2014 to 2015, the economy suffered a severe downturn, with GDP in 2015 being slightly above half of its value in 2013.
