Republic of Moldova is a sovereign state in Eastern Europe. Ukraine and Moldova reached an agreement in 2005 ensuring Moldova's access to the Black Sea and ending its landlocked status. The unrecognised, breakaway region of Transnistria lies across the Dniester on the country's eastern border with Ukraine. Most of Moldovan territory was a part of the Principality of Moldavia from the 14th century until 1812, when it was ceded to the Russian Empire by the Ottoman Empire
